Greek Independence Day is on March 25th a national holiday in Greece that commemorates the country’s declaration of independence from Ottoman rule in 1821. It marks the beginning of the Greek War of Independence, a revolutionary struggle until 1830. The day is celebrated with parades, flag-waving, and traditional events across Greece and Greek communities around the world. The festivities on this day also include school parades, military parades in major cities (especially in Athens), and cultural performances that honor Greece’s fight for freedom.
The traditional dish eaten on this day is bakaliaros skordal which is fried cod fritters with a garlic potato dip along with many more specialty dishes that are prepared in different regions of Greece.
