Greek Honey Puffs (Loukoumades)

Hey there,

I was first introduced to Loukoumades when I visited Greece for the very first time. I must have been about twelve.  Sweet honey, warm dough, a little cinnamon in the air it was impossible to resist. One bite, and I was completely hooked. I think that’s when my love for Greek desserts officially began.

There’s this legendary dessert shop in downtown Athens called “Krinos.” It’s been around forever, and guess what? The only thing they make and have always made are Loukoumades. Simple, golden, honey-soaked perfection.  Last year, I spent about three months in Greece for personal reasons, and let’s just say… Krinos became part of my weekly routine. I’d head downtown at least twice a week, sometimes with my cousin Julie, with friends, and we’d make a beeline straight for those Loukoumades. Crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, dripping with honey… for me, that was pure happiness in a bite.  There are desserts that make me smile… and then there are Loukoumades. 🙂

If you’ve ever been to Greece, you’ve probably seen (or smelled!) these being made at local fairs, trays piled high, slathered with honey and sprinkled with cinnamon.  These Greek Honey Puffs Loukoumades aren’t just dessert; they’re a whole mood.  Usually, there is a small variety of ingredients that go into making these little puffs, but here’s a twist.  This time, only two ingredients.  Amazing!!!

I still remember my very first try of loukoumades. It was summertime, and my parents took my brother and me downtown, promising a visit to a “special place” with the most delicious desserts. Naturally, I imagined something like a milkshake, but this was Greece in the ’70s, so milkshakes weren’t exactly a thing! Instead, what we got was a sweet, crunchy, soft, and definitely messy dessert in the best possible way. From that day on, Loukoumades had me seriously hooked.

Now, making Loukoumades at home might sound a little intimidating at first, but trust me, it’s simpler than it looks. Now, I have never made Loukoumades with two ingredients. When I watched the chef prepare them, I was intrigued. The traditional recipe for Loukoumades usually calls for quite a few ingredients, but this time, I wanted to see if this recipe would work. And guess what? It absolutely did!

Everyone makes them a bit differently; some add a sprinkle of cinnamon, others top them with chopped nuts or even a scoop of ice cream. But for me, nothing beats the classic: warm honey, a touch of cinnamon, and a big smile.

Loukoumades are more than just a sweet treat; they’re part of the Greek spirit. They bring people together, make kitchens smell amazing, and remind us that sometimes the simplest things in life are the sweetest.

Grab that mixing bowl, heat the oil, and treat yourself with these delicious Greek Honey Puffs (Loukoumades). Just don’t say I didn’t warn you… Stopping at one is impossible.

Crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and dripping with golden honey and sprinkled with cinnamon powder, these Greek Honey Puffs (Loukoumades) are pure joy in bite-sized form.

Cuisine Greek
Servings 12 pieces

Ingredients

  • 330 grams self-rising flour
  • 330 ml orange soda sugar free
  • cinnamon
  • honey
  • 1 - 1.5 liter vegetable oil

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine the flour with the orange soda. Use a spatula;, a whisk will not work as well.
  • Heat the oil and, if you have a thermometer handy, wait until it reaches about 170°C. Then, start dropping in spoonfuls of dough, one at a time.
  • Using a spoon dipped in water (so the dough doesn’t stick), scoop out a small spoonful of dough and gently drop it into the hot oil. Fry in batches. Don’t overcrowd the pan!
  • There’s another traditional way to shape them, but honestly, it’s a bit messy. Trust me, using a spoon works just fine, and you’ll still end up with perfectly golden little puffs.
  • Serve them hot, drizzled with plenty of honey and sprinkled with cinnamon. For a little extra crunch, toss your favorite roasted nuts on top.
