Hey there foodie friends,
Greek Grape Spoon Dessert is a traditional dessert made with whole grapes preserved in a thick, sweet syrup. A syrup dessert, friends, so if you’re lucky enough to have Greek friends and have ever visited a Greek home, you probably know this ritual when visiting family and friends. The moment you walk in, someone, usually it’s a mom, grandma, or a friend’s mom, suddenly appears holding a tiny glass plate with a jewel-like dessert and a spoon. This is no ordinary welcome.
This is the Greek Grape Spoon Dessert, known as “To glyko tou koutaliou.” The legendary Greek spoon sweet is one of my favorites: the grape spoon dessert. These shiny little bites are not your average jam or compote. Nope. Spoon sweets are whole fruits (yes, whole) and gently preserved in syrup. It’s what you offer to guests when they drop by unannounced, usually with a glass of cold water and a small coffee. FYI, these little desserts also have a cherry tomato version, believe it or not.
