A Day of Greek History March 25th

Hello everyone,

This is not a recipe post but more of a celebration post, for  March 25th is one of those days that lives deep in the Greek heart. It’s a double celebration, a national holiday and a religious one, and if you grew up in a Greek home, you know the feeling. Flags hanging from balconies, church bells ringing, families gathering, and that unmistakable sense of pride in the air.

On the national side, March 25th marks the start of the Greek War of Independence in 1821, when Greece rose after centuries of Ottoman rule. It’s a day that honors courage, resilience, and the belief that freedom is worth fighting for.

And of course,  because we’re Greek, it’s also a day of food. Most homes prepare bakaliaros skordalia (fried cod with garlic dip), a tradition that somehow manages to be both humble and celebratory at the same time.  Even now, living far from Greece, March 25th still brings that familiar warmth. It’s a reminder of where we come from, what our ancestors fought for, and the traditions that keep us connected no matter where we live.

Χρόνια Πολλά σε όλους, may this day bring pride, joy, and a little taste of home.
