Cheese filled Fried Bread (Tyropsomo)

Cheese stuffed Fried Bread

Cheese stuffed Fried Greek Bread

Hey there everyone,

I’ve had a bit of a strange or should I say stressful week.  I’m not sure if it’s the heat or the way the planets are aligned…or just maybe I’m tired.  I had the opporunity yesterday to take the day off from work, and meet up with my mom and cousin. 🙂  We spent a lovely day together just chatting and catching up on each other news.  I am going to be honest.  I loved living, and growing up in NYC, but I seriously miss not living in Greece anymore.  Sometimes, I think about how my life was here, and the differences from where I am living now. Hugeeee!!

The first time I tried this fried bread is when I came to Greece on a summer vacation back in the 70’s, I was 11 years old…hehehhe.  We visited some family friends, in the area of Chalkida, Greece where this recipe is orginally from.  I remember watching my mom’s friend frying this bread and I thought to myself  “frying bread”???  What was she doing?? but when we finally sat at the table for lunch, my mom gave me a piece to try and I loved it!!!

I knew that the moment I had some free time I would definitly go to the supermarket, and do some delicious ingredient shopping. 🙂 Once I was settled in I made these little breads, popped them into the freezer for one of those days that I wasn’t in the mood to cook. This might remind of you of a Greek Cheese pie, otherwise known as Tyropitta.  It is definitely  similar in regards to the Greek cheese but not the taste.  This is more of puff pastry dough bread recipe, whereas the Cheese pie (Tyropitta) has  tissue thin sheets of  phyllo dough.  And the bread is fried in Vegetable Oil not baked. 🙂

If you do decide to try out this recipe, I would love to hear your feedback.

Have a great week everyone!!

INGREDIENTS:

2 cups All Purpose Flour

1 1/2 cups Warm Water

1/2 teaspoon Salt

1/4 cup Olive Oil

1 package Dry Yeast

2 cups Feta Cheese

Vegetable Oil (for frying)

Honey (optional)

PREPARATION:

In a large bowl add flour, salt, and dry yeast.  Mix dry ingredients throughly, make a hole in the middle and continue to add  warm water.  (Set aside for about 20 minutes)  This should make about 3 dough balls.  Roll out one dough ball, fill with cheese mix, flip over excess dough to cover cheese mix.

Fry both sides until golden brown.

A delicious topping for this bread is Honey!!  You will love it…

KALI MAS OREXI!!! 🙂
